In the battle Drupal vs Joomla…

In the search for usable CMS I tried Drupal 6.13 (2009-Jul-01) and Joomla 1.5.13 (2009-Jul-22).  I tried a couple of dozen CMS from (they offer Online Demos for almost all PHP CMS), but Drupal and Joomla seems to be the major players (at least in user hearts).

Somehow, I first evaluated Drupal, and everything seemed to be acceptable. I even selected a nice looking skin for my new CMS. That until I somehow missed, that Drupal does not have Wysiwyg editor. Of course, you can use one of the plug-ins, but the problem is, that no Wysiwyg plug-in works as expected, and there is no out of the box “Image Browser”. Also, there are numerous threads in Drupal forums, about how things break when you add FCKeditor, TinyMCE, YUI Rich Text Editor, etc. BTW, my first try, to install TinyMCE failed. The FAQ in Drupal site, said, that I need to edit some PHP file. Wow, this is called Content Management System with What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get editor, just wow.

When I evaluated Joomla, I was a little bit skeptical (maybe cautious). I have spent a half of the day learning what is category, section, module, plug-in, MainPage and other building blocks. I liked the UI, and at the end I even liked Joomla. The show stopper was absence of comment and tag system. Of course everyone is using plug-ins, but I do not want a maintenance nightmare. So I will wait till version where Joomla’s comment plug-in are included as base module.

So you ask me, who won in this battle? I chose WordPress. Maybe all I needed was a simple to use blog engine and authors of WordPress got it right.
